In the Gallery - James D. Mabe
An opening reception will be held in honor of James D. Mabe on Friday, September 26, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Apple Gallery at the Stokes County Arts Council, 500 N. Main Street, Danbury, North Carolina. The public is invited to attend this free event.
James Mabe is a North Carolina native and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he majored in Philosophy. His paintings have been exhibited throughout the Piedmont and have been used as cover art for the horror fiction authors, the Light Brothers. His own fiction has been featured in the UNC-G literary magazine, The Coraddi.
This exhibit, entitled “Ars Gratia Nihilo” which translates to ‘art for the sake of nothing’ exhibits the artist’s vision of surrealism, transgression, horror and the macabre. The utilization of oils allows James Mabe freedom of expression and in his words “it allows a lot of room for error.” He is a self-taught oil painter, influenced largely by comic books, pretentious music, bad horror films and weird fiction. James Mabe is also the author of a novel, “All The Lights in the World.”
This exhibit will be on display during the month of October. The Apple Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information about the artist and his work, visit www.jamesmabe.com or for more information about the opening reception and exhibit, contact the Stokes County Arts Council at (336) 593-8159.
